It seems that holding an elected office is similar to being a college student- they like to take pictures on themselves and send them online...I thought they had a little more sense.
It was only a few months ago when congressman Chris Lee resigned from the House of Representatives after he was “caught being a creepy moron”. Lee had sent shirtless photos to a woman he met on Craigslist. Unfortunately, Lee is married and with a young child. He admitted to sending the photos, apologized sincerely, and resigned. He did not try and fight by lying, and for this I give him a certain amount of credit.
On the other hand, another ‘creep’ in office, Anthony Weiner, has taken our attention off of the important issues in our country and focused them on himself. Weiner has been lying to the public for a week, but yesterday finally admitted to crotch pictures he sent via the Internet to a woman other than his wife. At first he lied saying his Twitter account had been hacked; then yesterday admitted to sending the photos and apologized.
As Jon Stewart mentions on an episode of The Daily Show, these are incredible times, especially in the Middle East; there is violence, instability, oppression. But what is the public focused on? Anthony Weiner’s wiener. But it’s not the public's fault, there would be far less attention paid to him had he not lied and denied.
My questions are why are we paying them? Shouldn’t they be working on real issues for the better of the public? Personally, I think in order to combat the ‘zipper mentality’ these men have, we need to elect more women into office. Then maybe we could focus on the important issues: jobs, war, healthcare, education, etc.
I Agree with you 100% when you say that these politicians should be working on important issues our nation is facing.
ReplyDeleteSocial networks have been getting many in trouble and I feel that if you are public figure you should no better. Not only what Wiener did was inappropriate for anyone, but it was uncalled for as someone who holds a high status position and is looked upon as some one with responsibility and credibility.
It shows low moral and character and does not set a good example for young kids who use social networking sites such as twitter and facebook.
I think he should have been smarter about the situation and sending half naked photos of yourself isn't acceptable no matter what age, especially if you're married with a child on the way.
I agree with you. I think we have more important things to worry about then what Anthony Weiner is doing with his weiner. In America, we think being a good politician means being a good person or having good character. However, in other areas of the world, primarily France, they think personal issues and political issues are completely separate. They might not want to be best friends with a candidate or politician, but they consider his policies and ideas about the government to be good for the country. I understand morals and values are important, but I also think his personal business should not impact his political career, however far fetched that idea may be.
