Dear fellow students and peers,

I have realized that I owe you and many others an apology. I feel that in the last presidential elections I made a choice that I do not agree with today. In 2008, when I was a freshman living at USF I received much of my political information from other students around me and casted my vote based on their biased information.

In the 2008 elections I, along with many other students, cast my vote for Barrack Obama. I disagree today with my choice for many reasons. It is not fair to weigh all of the negative things going on in our economy on President Obama’s shoulders. I do not feel that they are his fault, but I do feel that some of his policies and procedures have made situations much worse. The Obama Administration has contributed more to national debt than any other president. Federal debt increased by 2.5260 trillion dollars during the first 19 months of his presidency. The unemployment rate has been extremely high, currently at 9.1%. Interest rates, credit card rates, auto loans, student loan rates, mortgages, etc are all rising. The consensus is growing that Obama’s economic policies are not working, and I think it will be very interesting to see how voters react in next year’s election.

Much of the news that we receive today is biased information. From Fox news, MSNBC, the New York Times, or even our work environments and college campuses. So in the future I would advise when making political decisions it is best to listen to multiple sources, review representatives and their past job performances. I know that I plan to personally listen to many news sources and opinions before making a decision.

  1. Interesting thoughts, as a fellow liberal I have not yet come to the point of regret with my vote just yet. I do wonder though, as you do, if the Obama administration is taking the right steps. It is my belief though, that this a huge economic crisis we are facing and a few policies are not going to make a vast, quick difference. I stand by my opinion that Obama was the better candidate, and think, the stress from the economy could have put old man McCain in the grave and we would have Mrs. Palin as President. I have no doubt that we would be in a worse boat then.

  2. I would argue to say that we don't really even have a democracy. And just for the record this country was never even founded as a democracy to begin with. The United States is a republic. Not a democracy. That is just the route history has taken us. Policies only get enforced nowadays dependent upon the lobbyists and their money going to greedy politician hands. Vote for an independent party candidate next election and make your voice heard. Sooner or later the white house is going to be sponsored by 1-800-ASK-GARY.

  3. I can definitely relate to this post. A couple years ago I went to Washington D.C. with my boyfriend and his mom for the rally against universal healthcare. It was very empowering to see others just like me who admitted they made the wrong decision in their vote and are now trying to do the right thing and make a stand against Obama trying to socialize our healthcare system.

I was too one of those students who just went along with what my peers were saying instead of doing the research for myself. And I do agree when you say that not everything is his fault, but I do think he made false promises (of coucrse) to win the votes.
